Research
Our
research project this year is about Juvenile Arthritis, specifically
about kids taking a lot of pills for arthritis. "Arth"
means joint, and "itis" means inflammation, so that means
Arth-ritis is Joint Inflammation. We found that not very many
people know kids can get arthritis. There are over 10,000 kids
in Michigan and over 300,000 kids in the United States with
arthritis. There is no cure. The treatment is to take
alot pills every day or an injection each week. The
injection costs about $3000 per month. Another option is
surgery to put in new tissue in between the joints.
Our
solution is a powder that contains most of the medications needed,
powdered milk, and calcium. It also has strawberry, pink grapefruit,
orange, lemon, and cherry juices contain vitamin C. Vitamin
C forms collagen, the "glue" that holds the cells together
in the joints, when there is not enough, you can get arthritis. And
it also contains MSM powder to help with the pain. MSM is
Methyl-sulfonyl-methane,
a dietary form of sulfur that helps ease pain in joints.
